ChestertownChestertown, Maryland
Give Chestertown one night, two at most: the historic district is compact and walkable, so a day plus a riverfront evening covers the core sights.
Chestertown is a small colonial port on Maryland's Eastern Shore, founded 1706 and the seat of Kent County. The draw is the walkable brick-sidewalk historic district, the Chester River waterfront and a calendar of weekend festivals, not a list of ticketed sights. It works as a slow one- or two-night stop between the Bay Bridge and Rock Hall, or as a base for Washington College visits.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
Walk the historic district: High Street and Cross Street hold the shops and restaurants, and the waterfront is two blocks away. A car is needed for anything outside downtown — Rock Hall, Betterton, Galena and the surrounding farmland are all a drive. Parking downtown is on-street and free in most blocks.

Kent Island
cautionDoor to door: About 45 min

Mostly a Bay Bridge crossing point and outlet shopping; go only if you are heading west anyway.
Door to door: About 1 h 15 min
MD-213 south to US-50 east by car
Longer haul; better as an overnight on an Eastern Shore loop than a return day trip.
Smith Island

Drive south to a Somerset County ferry landing, then a scheduled passenger ferry
The drive to the ferry landing is long and ferry schedules are limited and weather-dependent; check sailings before committing.

Watch out
Safety
- Festival weekends (Tea Party in May, Downrigging in November) fill every inn: book months ahead.
- Rural roads are dark and deer are common at dusk and after.
- Many downtown shops and galleries keep short hours and close on some weekdays: check before you plan a shopping day.
- Summer heat and humidity on the Eastern Shore; the waterfront has little shade at midday.
