Chestertown
Chestertown, Maryland
Give Chestertown one night, two at most: the historic district is compact and walkable, so a day plus a riverfront evening covers the core sights.
Chestertown is a small colonial port on Maryland's Eastern Shore, founded 1706 and the seat of Kent County. The draw is the walkable brick-sidewalk historic district, the Chester River waterfront and a calendar of weekend festivals, not a list of ticketed sights. It works as a slow one- or two-night stop between the Bay Bridge and Rock Hall, or as a base for Washington College visits.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Festival weekends (Tea Party in May, Downrigging in November) fill every inn: book months ahead.
- Rural roads are dark and deer are common at dusk and after.
- Many downtown shops and galleries keep short hours and close on some weekdays: check before you plan a shopping day.
- Summer heat and humidity on the Eastern Shore; the waterfront has little shade at midday.
Chestertown is a quiet small town and violent crime is rare; the practical risks are deer on rural roads at night, summer heat on the waterfront and unlit streets once you leave the historic district.
