Trakai is a small lakeside town 28 km west of Vilnius, built around a 14th-century island castle on Lake Galvė. Almost everyone comes for the castle and the Karaite food street, and almost everyone goes back to Vilnius the same day. The town itself is walkable end to end in an hour.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are the 3 km (1.9 mi) walk back to the station after dark, thin ice on the lake in winter, and mosquitoes at the north-shore campsite in summer.
  • The castle is sometimes closed or used as a concert venue — check the museum site before you travel.
  • The Karaite Ethnographic Museum in the kenesa has been closed since 2020; do not plan around it.
  • Trains from Vilnius have a long midday gap; buses run at least hourly and are the safer bet.
  • The last train back to Vilnius leaves Trakai around 20:40 — miss it and you are on a bus or a taxi.
  • Parking in town is limited; drivers should use the free lot at Varnikai and walk in over the footbridges.
