Do Trakai as a half-day from Vilnius: 30–40 min by bus or train, 3 km on foot to the castle. Sleep over only if you want the lake at dusk.
Trakai is a small lakeside town 28 km west of Vilnius, built around a 14th-century island castle on Lake Galvė. Almost everyone comes for the castle and the Karaite food street, and almost everyone goes back to Vilnius the same day. The town itself is walkable end to end in an hour.

- Trains from Vilnius have a long midday gap; buses run at least hourly and are the safer bet.
- The last train back to Vilnius leaves Trakai around 20:40 — miss it and you are on a bus or a taxi.
- Parking in town is limited; drivers should use the free lot at Varnikai and walk in over the footbridges.
