Växjö is a small university town in Småland with lakes on three sides and a 12th-century cathedral whose windows are filled with glass from the region's furnaces. The town itself is a half-day on foot; the reason to stay longer is the Kingdom of Crystal, 30–60 km away and awkward without a car. Trains reach Copenhagen and its airport directly, which makes it a soft landing or a last stop in Sweden.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Storgatan is the spine and the station sits at its south end. Buses (Länstrafiken Kronoberg) cover the rest and leave from the station; a bicycle is the fastest way to the lakes and Bergkvara. Taxis queue at the station; TaxiKurir takes app bookings.

Safety

Växjö is calm and safe for a Swedish town of its size. Watch for ice in winter, dark unlit paths by the lakes, and bicycles on shared pavements.
  • Glassworks are spread across small towns and poorly served by public transport: without a car, pick one and check its opening days.
  • Many glassworks and museums close or cut hours outside summer; check before travelling.
  • Winter days are short and pavements icy; bring shoes with grip.
  • Card is accepted almost everywhere, but a few small cafés and rural stops are cash-friendly.
