Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Lucca is a walled Tuscan city of about 89,000 people, 30 minutes by train from Pisa and 1 h 20 min from Florence. The old town fits inside its Renaissance walls, which are now a 4 km tree-lined ring park you can walk or cycle. Sights are compact and the evening is quieter than Florence or Siena, so it works as a day trip or a calm one-night base.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

On foot inside the walls: the old town is compact and flat. Bikes rent near the station and at Porta Santa Maria; a 4 km wall circuit takes about 30–40 min. Local navette buses run until about 20:00; buy tickets at a tobacconist and validate on board. Driving inside the walls is mostly residents-only, so park outside and walk in.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Pisa

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Train from Lucca station, every 30 min

Half-day for the Leaning Tower and the Arno; go early to beat the tower queues.

Bagni di Lucca

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Train on the Lucca–Aulla line, about 30 min, or 40 min by car on the SS12

Spa town in the Lima valley; hot springs and riverside trails.

Viareggio

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Train from Lucca, about 20–30 min

Coast, beach clubs and the Puccini villa at Torre del Lago nearby.

Forte dei Marmi

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Train to Viareggio or Massa, then bus or taxi

Beach day with high prices; a car makes it easier.

Florence

go

Door to door: About 1 h 20 min

Direct train from Lucca, at least hourly

Easy as a day trip, but Florence deserves its own nights.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Inside the walls (Via Fillungo, Anfiteatro, San Michele)

Walk to everything; book early, rooms are few and small.

Around the railway station and Porta San Pietro

Cheapest beds, 5–10 min walk to the old town; good for one night with bags.

Countryside east of the city (Capannori, San Martino in Colle)

Villas and pools with parking; you need a car.

Watch out

Safety

Lucca is a low-risk city; the real issues are pickpockets around the station and Anfiteatro in summer, bicycles on the wall path, and ZTL fines if you drive into the old town.
  • ZTL camera zones cover the old town: do not drive past the gates without a permit.
  • Torre Guinigi and Torre delle Ore have no lift and many stairs; skip in heavy rain.
  • Lucca Comics & Games (around 1 Nov) books out the city months ahead and doubles prices.
  • Evenings in the old town are quiet: many kitchens close by 22:00.
