Lucca is a walled Tuscan city of about 89,000 people, 30 minutes by train from Pisa and 1 h 20 min from Florence. The old town fits inside its Renaissance walls, which are now a 4 km tree-lined ring park you can walk or cycle. Sights are compact and the evening is quieter than Florence or Siena, so it works as a day trip or a calm one-night base.
