Give Adelaide 3 nights: 2 in the city grid, 1 at Glenelg, plus a Barossa or McLaren Vale day. Skip it only if wine and food are not your trip.
Adelaide is Australia's driest capital, a flat grid of wide streets and parkland between Gulf St Vincent and the Adelaide Hills, with the Barossa, Clare and McLaren Vale wine regions within day-trip range. It is quieter and cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne, and most of what you came for — Central Market, the museum strip, the beaches, the wine — sits within 30 minutes of the centre.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
The CBD is a flat grid you can walk end to end in about 30 minutes, with a free tram along North Terrace and free city buses. Adelaide Metro trains, trams and buses use a rechargeable metroCARD; the tram runs from the city to Glenelg in about 30 minutes. Hire a car only for wine-region days or the Hills.

goDoor to door: 1–1.25 h

Closer than the Barossa and pairs with a Fleurieu Peninsula coast drive.
Hahndorf and the Adelaide Hills
goDoor to door: 40–50 min

German-settled village, cool-climate wineries and Mount Lofty lookout.

Too far for a day return; sleep 2 nights and bring a car or book tours.

Adelaide Metro Gawler line train from the city
A separate town with heritage streets; only worth it if you are already heading north.

Adelaide CBD (city grid)

North Adelaide
Quieter streets and pubs north of the river, 15–20 min walk or a short bus into the CBD.
Glenelg
Beach base with a tram line straight into the city; good for a slower last night.
Port Adelaide
Heritage port with museums and a dolphin cruise; cheaper beds, but you will use the train.
