Paraparaumu is a Kapiti Coast town 54 minutes by train from Wellington, made of three parts: the town centre around Coastlands and the railway station, Paraparaumu Beach to the west, and Raumati to the south. Its one big draw is Kapiti Island, a predator-free nature reserve reached by permit-only boat from Paraparaumu Beach. Everything else — a car museum, a beach, a coastal park — fills a day or two between Wellington and the rest of the North Island.

Getting around

The Kapiti Line train runs roughly hourly (sometimes twice hourly) from Wellington to Paraparaumu in about 54 min, continuing one stop to Waikanae. Local buses link Raumati, the town centre, Coastlands and Paraparaumu Beach; the Raumati–Paraparaumu run takes about 10 min. Taxis are available. A car makes the car museum, Queen Elizabeth Park and the beaches much easier; without one you are tied to the bus and train timetable.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime coastal town; the real risks are weather and water. Swim between the flags at Paraparaumu Beach, watch for driftwood and strong currents, and treat the island crossing as a sea trip, not a ferry ride.
  • Kapiti Island entry needs a DOC permit, sold with the ferry ticket; private boats are not allowed and bags are inspected for biosecurity before departure.
  • Island boats are weather-dependent and can be cancelled at short notice — keep a spare day if the island matters to you.
  • Left-hand driving with one-lane bridges on the roads north and south; SH1 through the Kapiti Coast is busy at commuter times.
  • Summer can be windy and changeable even when Wellington looks fine; bring a layer for the beach.
