Masterton is the Wairarapa's biggest town, 100 km and about 1 h 30 min by road from Wellington over the Remutaka hill, or 95 min by Metlink train. It is flat, walkable and cheap, with a museum, a sheep-shearing museum and the Tararua Forest Park on its doorstep. Most travellers see it as a stop on the way to Martinborough wine country or Hawke's Bay, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is flat and three parallel streets (Chapel, Queen, Dixon) hold most shops and cafés, so walk or cycle. A weekday shopper bus runs four rotating routes 09:00–15:15; a car is needed for Mt Holdsworth, the wineries and the coast.

Safety

Masterton is a small, quiet town and street crime is low; the real risks are the Rimutaka hill road, winter weather in the Tararuas and long waits for a routine doctor's appointment.
  • Rimutaka Hill Road on SH 2 between Wellington and Masterton is winding with a poor crash record: drive it in daylight and take the signposted heavy-traffic bypass if you are only passing through.
  • No passenger flights serve Masterton; Hood Aerodrome is for the biennial air show only.
  • The Sunday and public-holiday bus gap: the Wairarapa public bus does not run Sundays or public holidays.
  • Routine doctor appointments can take 7–10 days; Wairarapa Hospital on Te Ore Ore Road handles accidents and emergencies.
