Masterton
Whakaoriori
Give Masterton one night as a Wairarapa base: the town itself is half a day, the Tararua tracks and the balloon and shearing weekends are the reason to stay longer.
Masterton is the Wairarapa's biggest town, 100 km and about 1 h 30 min by road from Wellington over the Remutaka hill, or 95 min by Metlink train. It is flat, walkable and cheap, with a museum, a sheep-shearing museum and the Tararua Forest Park on its doorstep. Most travellers see it as a stop on the way to Martinborough wine country or Hawke's Bay, not as a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Rimutaka Hill Road on SH 2 between Wellington and Masterton is winding with a poor crash record: drive it in daylight and take the signposted heavy-traffic bypass if you are only passing through.
- No passenger flights serve Masterton; Hood Aerodrome is for the biennial air show only.
- The Sunday and public-holiday bus gap: the Wairarapa public bus does not run Sundays or public holidays.
- Routine doctor appointments can take 7–10 days; Wairarapa Hospital on Te Ore Ore Road handles accidents and emergencies.
Masterton is a small, quiet town and street crime is low; the real risks are the Rimutaka hill road, winter weather in the Tararuas and long waits for a routine doctor's appointment.
