Balıkesir is a working Anatolian city on the Istanbul–Izmir corridor, not a resort. Almost everything worth seeing — the clock tower, the National Forces Museum, the 14th- and 15th-century mosques — is inside a 500 m walk of the railway station, so a half-day on the way through is enough. The coast at Bandırma, Edremit and the thermal springs in the hills are separate trips.

Getting around

Walk: the clock tower, museums and mosques are within 500 m of the railway station. Local buses and dolmuş minibuses radiate from Eski Garaj, the old bus terminal beside the station. The main otogar is 5 km north-east on the Bandırma road, with frequent shuttles to Eski Garaj.

Watch out

Safety

A normal, low-risk inland Turkish city. The practical issues are summer heat, uneven pavements, and unlit side streets after dark; take the usual care with bags around the station and otogar.
  • The city is inland and hot in July and August; plan indoor stops at midday.
  • Some listed sights have irregular or unverified opening hours — the photography museum has been closed and the contemporary art museum's posted hours are unreliable. Check locally before walking out.
  • The 1898 (≈ US$50) earthquake destroyed most of the old town; do not expect a historic quarter.
  • Carry lira in small notes for buses, dolmuş and small eateries.
