Occidental is a small Sonoma County town of about 1,100 people on the Bohemian Highway, 20-25 minutes inland from Bodega Bay and about 1 h 30 min north of San Francisco. It is a food-and-redwoods stop: a handful of long-running Italian and farm-to-table kitchens, a redwood grove, a zipline course and a day spa, with Freestone's bakery and cheese shop two minutes down the road. Most travellers see it in an afternoon and sleep one night, or use it as a lunch stop between the coast and the wine towns.

Getting around

You need a car. Sonoma County Transit Route 28 links Occidental with Sebastopol and Santa Rosa, but service is thin and does not reach the coast sights. The Bohemian Highway is a two-lane rural road: drive it in daylight, watch for cyclists on weekend mornings, and expect no street lighting.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a rural Sonoma town; the real risks are the two-lane Bohemian Highway at night, cyclists on blind weekend corners, and summer heat on the inland side of the ridge.
  • Cell signal drops on the back roads toward the coast; download offline maps.
  • The Grove of Old Trees is reached by a narrow residential lane with no toilets or water: park tight, walk in.
  • Restaurant kitchens close early and several places shut two or three days a week: check hours the same day.
  • Summer afternoon heat inland and fog at the coast on the same drive: pack a layer.
