Occidental

Give Occidental one night, two at most: a redwood-and-food stop on the Sonoma County coast road, not a base for a whole Sonoma trip.

Occidental is a small Sonoma County town of about 1,100 people on the Bohemian Highway, 20-25 minutes inland from Bodega Bay and about 1 h 30 min north of San Francisco. It is a food-and-redwoods stop: a handful of long-running Italian and farm-to-table kitchens, a redwood grove, a zipline course and a day spa, with Freestone's bakery and cheese shop two minutes down the road. Most travellers see it in an afternoon and sleep one night, or use it as a lunch stop between the coast and the wine towns.

Get around

You need a car. Sonoma County Transit Route 28 links Occidental with Sebastopol and Santa Rosa, but service is thin and does not reach the coast sights. The Bohemian Highway is a two-lane rural road: drive it in daylight, watch for cyclists on weekend mornings, and expect no street lighting.
