  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Lanzhou is the capital of Gansu and a Silk Road stop on the Yellow River, at 1,570 m. It is an industrial city of about 4.5 million that most travellers use as a rail and bus junction for Dunhuang, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Xiahe. The city itself rewards one or two days: the Gansu Provincial Museum, the 1909 Zhongshan Bridge, the waterwheel park and beef noodles.

Getting around

Two metro lines: Line 1 runs east–west linking the centre with Lanzhou West Railway Station, Line 2 crosses it. Fares about ¥2–4. Bus 1 is useful between the main railway station, Qingyang Lu and Lanzhou West. A city bike scheme has docks around town. Taxis are cheap; agree the meter or a price first.

Watch out

Safety

Lanzhou is generally safe for tourists by day and evening; the real issues are the 75 km airport run, dry winter cold, and cheap hotels that cannot register foreign passports. Keep to lit streets at night and use the meter in taxis.
  • Airport is 75 km out: allow 1.5 h door to door by rail or shuttle, more by taxi in traffic.
  • Some budget hotels near the railway station refuse foreign passports; confirm before you pay.
  • Altitude is 1,570 (≈ US$250) m — most people are fine, but drink water and take the first day easy.
  • Museum entry is free but needs a WeChat reservation; no booking, no entry.
  • Winter is dry and well below freezing; summer rain can arrive fast in July and August.
