Carlinville is a Macoupin County seat of about 5,700 people, 12 miles off I-55 and on the Amtrak Lincoln Service between Chicago and St. Louis. Its draw is a compact historic square, the 1870 courthouse and the country's largest cluster of Sears Catalog Homes. Two to four hours covers it on foot; the surrounding state park, orchard and winery need a car.

The square, courthouse, old jail and Sears Homes streets are walkable from each other in 10–20 minutes. Everything else — the lake, the state park, the orchard, the winery, the fairgrounds — needs a car. Macoupin County Transit runs limited inter-town service; check days and booking.

Safety

A quiet county-seat town; the practical risks are a missed Amtrak departure, unlit rural roads at night and summer heat. Lock the car and keep to the square after dark.
  • Amtrak calls here a few times a day only: miss the train and the next one is hours away.
  • Most square shops and the small restaurants close by late afternoon and on Sundays; plan eating around that.
  • The Sears Homes are private houses on ordinary streets: look from the pavement, do not knock or park in driveways.
  • Summer heat and winter ice are the real hazards; there is no rideshare coverage to fall back on.
