Písek is a small South Bohemian town of about 30,000 people, best known for the oldest stone bridge in the Czech Republic, built in the 13th century and older than Prague's Charles Bridge. The compact historic centre, a castle museum and a riverside walk cover a half day. It works as a break between Prague and Český Krumlov or České Budějovice, not as a base.

Safety

Písek is a calm small town; the main risks are pickpockets around the bus and train stations, unlit river paths after dark and drinking on the bridge. Emergency number 112 works everywhere.
  • The synagogue interior is not open to visitors; only the exterior can be seen.
  • The castle museum closes on Mondays and shuts earlier from October to December.
  • Some listed cafés and guesthouses have gone quiet or closed: confirm before you walk there.
  • Czech law is zero alcohol for drivers.
