Cochem is a small Mosel town of about 5,300 people, built on a bend of the river below a restored castle. It is the busiest stop on the Mosel wine route and works as a base for the valley: everything in the centre is a short walk, and trains run to Koblenz and Trier. Most visitors see the castle, the promenade and the old town in a day; a second night buys the chairlift, a wine tasting and a slow morning.

Getting around

The centre, Cond and Sehl are all walkable; the climb to the castle and upper town is steep. Local buses and the Mosel rail line (VRM fares) link the villages; bikes can be rented in town for about €8 a day with ID and a deposit.

Safety

Very safe for a town of its size. The real risks are the steep, uneven castle path, river currents if you swim, and wine bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • The castle path is steep and uneven: allow 15–20 min up and wear shoes with grip.
  • Many restaurants and wine bars close early outside summer; the town goes quiet after 18:00.
  • Chairlift runs roughly Easter to mid-November only: check dates before you plan around it.
  • Mosel valley parking is tight in summer; use the station car park and walk.
  • Card payment is not universal in small wine bars: carry some cash.
