Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Koblenz sits where the Moselle meets the Rhine, at the northern end of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO site. The old town, the Deutsches Eck and the Ehrenbreitstein fortress fill a day; the real value is the rail and boat network that puts Boppard, Bacharach, Cochem and the Marksburg within an hour. Two nights is the working minimum, three if you want a river day and a Moselle day.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Hauptbahnhof to the Deutsches Eck is about 20 minutes on foot. Buses run roughly 05:30–23:00 from the station; the VRM journey planner is more reliable than map apps here. Cross to Ehrenbreitstein by ferry, bus or the cable car, or walk up the access road. Bicycles are the quickest way to Stolzenfels, about 6 km upriver.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Boppard

go

Door to door: About 30 min by train

Regional train from Koblenz Hbf along the left bank, or a KD river boat in season

Chairlift over the vineyards and a Rhine bend; pair with a boat leg back.

Braubach and Marksburg

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Regional train to Braubach, then a steep walk up to the castle

The most complete medieval castle on the Rhine; guided tours only, check times.

Door to door: About 1 h

Regional train down the left bank

Walled town under Burg Stahleck; combine with Oberwesel on the same line.

Sankt Goar and the Loreley

go

The narrowest, fastest stretch of the river; the Loreley rock is above Sankt Goarshausen.

Door to door: About 1 h–1 h 30 min

Moselle line train via Treis-Karden

Reichsburg castle above a wine town; a full day if you add a Moselle boat.

Stolzenfels Castle

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Bus 670 to Schlossweg, bike, or a boat upriver

Inside the city boundary; buses are infrequent, so check the return times.

Bendorf

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

Regional train or bus north of the city

Quiet Rhine-side suburb; only worth it if you have a specific reason.

Oberwesel

go

Door to door: About 1 h 10 min

Regional train down the left bank

Town walls and churches; stack it with Bacharach in one day.

Trechtingshausen and Burg Rheinstein

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Regional train, then a walk up to the castle

Small village, one of the earliest rebuilt Rhine castles.

Sankt Goarshausen

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Regional train to Sankt Goar, then the ferry across the river

Right-bank twin of Sankt Goar, under the Loreley rock; the ferry runs in season.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Altstadt / Zentralplatz

Old town, Forum Mittelrhein and the tourist office on foot; best for a short stay without a car.

Around Hauptbahnhof

Cheapest beds and the easiest early train out; 15–20 min walk to the Deutsches Eck.

Rheinufer / Ehrenbreitstein side

River views and the cable car and hostel at the fortress; some rooms sit close to the rail line.

Watch out

Safety

Koblenz is a low-risk city; the practical hazards are the fast river current, steep castle paths and cycle traffic on the riverside paths. Keep to marked paths at the Deutsches Eck and on the fortress hill.
  • Bus routes and stops are confusing and map apps often fail: use the VRM planner and allow extra time.
  • The Löhr Center car park closes shortly after the shops — do not leave a car there late.
  • Castle and fortress opening hours are seasonal and some sites close early; check before you travel out.
  • The riverside rail line runs close to some river-view hotels: ask for a room away from the tracks.
