Give Koblenz one full day and two nights as a base: the Deutsches Eck and Ehrenbreitstein take half a day, the rest is your launch point for the Rhine and Moselle valleys.
Koblenz sits where the Moselle meets the Rhine, at the northern end of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO site. The old town, the Deutsches Eck and the Ehrenbreitstein fortress fill a day; the real value is the rail and boat network that puts Boppard, Bacharach, Cochem and the Marksburg within an hour. Two nights is the working minimum, three if you want a river day and a Moselle day.
