Port Douglas is a small resort town of about 3,500 people where the Great Barrier Reef meets the Daintree Rainforest. Almost everything sits within a 15-minute walk of Macrossan Street, and the reef marina is at the end of it. It costs more than Cairns and offers far less nightlife, but it is the shortest run to the outer reef and the northern rainforest.

Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable: Macrossan Street to the marina is about 10 minutes, and Four Mile Beach runs the length of town. Local buses loop between the resorts and the centre roughly four times an hour from early morning to around midnight; a return ticket is tied to the company you bought it from. Reef and rainforest tours pick up at hotels. A car is only needed for the Daintree, Mossman Gorge and the Atherton Tablelands.

Watch out
Safety
- Saltwater crocodiles live in the area: obey the signs at Four Mile Beach, stay away from the water's edge at dusk, and keep children and dogs back. The beach closes if a crocodile is sighted.
- Stinger season runs November–May. Swim inside the netted, lifeguard-patrolled area at the north end of Four Mile Beach and read the day's stinger sign.
- The Captain Cook Highway north is sealed but winding; allow more time than the distance suggests.
- Reef trips and Daintree tours sell out in the dry season: book the day you arrive, not the morning you want to go.
