Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
  • Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
  • Denmark ↗Denmark is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; Greenland and the Faroe Islands have separate entry arrangements.
  • Denmark ↗Bike lanes are busy fast lanes: do not walk or stand in them, and signal before you stop if you cycle.
  • Denmark ↗Denmark is close to cashless: cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, even for small amounts.

Aarhus is Denmark's second city and its youngest: a university town of about 270,000 with a compact, walkable centre and three heavyweight sights — ARoS, Den Gamle By and Moesgaard. Two nights covers it well. Come May to September for street life; July empties out as locals leave. It is a 4-hour train ride from Copenhagen, so it works as a 2-night add-on to a week-long Denmark trip, not a day-trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is compact and flat enough to walk: Indre by, the Latin Quarter and the station are all within 15 minutes of each other. Bikes are the local default — Donkey Republic app bikes cost about kr 1 per minute, capped around kr 250 per day (check), and shops such as Friis Cykler rent by the day. Note that Aarhus has some of Denmark's steepest streets, so plan routes to avoid the climbs. Buses cover the outer districts; a single ticket is valid across bus and train within the zones you paid for.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Moesgaard Museum and Marselisborg Forests

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min by bus

City bus south to Moesgaard, or bike the coastal path through the forest

Pair the museum with a forest walk; the beach at Moesgaard Strand is a short walk on.

Samsø

caution

Door to door: About 1 h crossing plus boarding

M/F Lilleøre catamaran from Dokk1 to Sælvig; bicycles only, no cars

Feasible as a day trip if schedules align, but ferry and local transport are sparse; check timetables carefully.

Ebeltoft

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Bus or car north-east along the coast

Old town and the frigate Jylland; a full day out.

Silkeborg

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Train west, then local transport to the lakes

Lakes and the AQUA freshwater aquarium; canoe hire in summer.

Randers

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Train north

Rainforest and Gudenå river; easy half-day.

Horsens

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Train south

Worth it mainly for a specific museum or event — check what is on.

Vejle

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Train south

Fjord, forest and the wave-shaped bridge viewpoint.

Fredericia

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train south

Historic ramparts; a short stop rather than a full day.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Indre by and the Latin Quarter

Medieval core, pedestrianised, cobbled streets. Best for a first visit: walk to ARoS, Den Gamle By and the station.

Frederiksbjerg

Just south of the rail yard. Restaurants, specialty shops, low-rise streets; 10–15 min walk to the centre.

Aarhus Ø

New harbourfront district. Modern apartments and water views; 15–20 min walk or a short bus ride to the old town.

Trøjborg

Quiet early-1900s quarter north of the centre with its own shopping street, restaurants and a cinema.

Watch out

Safety

Aarhus is one of Europe's safer cities and the centre is calm at night. The real risks are pickpockets around the station and Strøget on busy weekends, bicycles and light-rail tracks underfoot, and dark unlit paths through the forests after sunset.
  • July to early August: many residents leave and some restaurants close for weeks — confirm hours before you plan around a specific place.
  • Easter: streets can be near-empty as Denmark closes down.
  • Bicycle streets give cyclists the full lane, but not every driver respects the rule — keep watching for cars.
  • The harbour ferry dock is 3–4 km from the city perimeter; public transport links there are poor, so arrange a ride or a rental car in advance.

Deep dive

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Aarhus. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Nov–Feb (grey, short days); mid-Jul to early Aug (locals away, some restaurants closed) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 8 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for AAR and BLL: last 925X and 912X departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Indre by and the Latin Quarter, ARoS and Vesterbro, Frederiksbjerg, Aarhus Ø.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (ARoS, Den Gamle By, Moesgaard, Dokk1) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Golden and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
