Ballyshannon is a small market town on the River Erne estuary in south County Donegal, 22 km south of Donegal Town and about 2,250 people. Its old waterfalls are gone, drowned by a 1946 hydro scheme, so the town works as a bed and a music stop rather than a sightseeing base. Bundoran, 7 km west, holds the beach, the surf and most of the hotels; Belleek, 8 km east, is across the border in Northern Ireland.

Getting around

You need wheels. Buses link Ballyshannon with Bundoran, Donegal Town, Sligo and Dublin, but they are too sparse for side trips. Local Link 982 runs about five times a day to Sligo, the nearest railway station, in 80 min. A car or a taxi is the practical way to reach Rossnowlagh, Kilbarron and the coast.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are Atlantic surf and currents at Bundoran, wet roads on the N15, and short winter daylight. Emergency number is 112 or 999.
  • The Belleek road crosses the UK border twice near the Magherboy salient: no checks, but carry valid ID and car documents.
  • Buses to Belleek drop you on the main road, not in the village; allow a walk.
  • Bundoran beach is Atlantic-exposed: surf, not safe bathing, and there are no lifeguards outside peak season.
  • Many Ballyshannon pubs and restaurants keep short, irregular hours; check before you walk out.
