Ballyshannon
Béal Átha Seanaidh
Give Ballyshannon one night as a Wild Atlantic Way stop between Donegal Town and Sligo; two nights only if you surf at Bundoran or catch the Rory Gallagher Festival.
Ballyshannon is a small market town on the River Erne estuary in south County Donegal, 22 km south of Donegal Town and about 2,250 people. Its old waterfalls are gone, drowned by a 1946 hydro scheme, so the town works as a bed and a music stop rather than a sightseeing base. Bundoran, 7 km west, holds the beach, the surf and most of the hotels; Belleek, 8 km east, is across the border in Northern Ireland.

Local Link 982 runs about five times a day to Sligo, the nearest railway station, in 80 min. A car or a taxi is the practical way to reach Rossnowlagh, Kilbarron and the coast.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
- Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
- Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
- Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
- Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Belleek road crosses the UK border twice near the Magherboy salient: no checks, but carry valid ID and car documents.
- Buses to Belleek drop you on the main road, not in the village; allow a walk.
- Bundoran beach is Atlantic-exposed: surf, not safe bathing, and there are no lifeguards outside peak season.
- Many Ballyshannon pubs and restaurants keep short, irregular hours; check before you walk out.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are Atlantic surf and currents at Bundoran, wet roads on the N15, and short winter daylight. Emergency number is 112 or 999.
