Sokcho is a small east-coast fishing city of about 80,000 people and the practical gateway to Seoraksan National Park, roughly 30 minutes by bus from the centre. Most travellers come for the mountain, then stay for the beach, the squid sundae and the crab market. Two nights covers it; three if you want a slow beach day.

Getting around

City buses cover the beach, both terminals and the Seoraksan park entrance; routes show in Naver Map but timetables are patchy, so allow slack. Taxis are cheap for short hops. A car helps for Yeongnangho Lake, Osaek and the coast north.

Watch out

Safety

Sokcho is a low-crime small city; the real risks are mountain weather, icy winter trails and rip currents outside the lifeguarded season. Keep 112 and 119 in your phone.
  • The express and intercity bus terminals are about 3 km apart: check which one your ticket uses before you arrive.
  • Sokcho Beach is officially open only roughly 10 Jul–20 Aug; swimming outside that window is not lifeguarded.
  • Seoraksan trails close or turn icy in winter and in heavy rain: check park notices before you set out.
  • Crab restaurants can run to about ₩100,000 (≈ US$75) for a crab with sides; the market's takeaway steamed crab is far cheaper.
