Galveston is a barrier island 45 minutes from Houston with 32 miles of Gulf beach, a Victorian downtown and the state's main cruise port. It is a beach-and-history weekend, not a big-city stop: two nights covers the Strand, the seawall and one museum. Summer is hot and humid; hurricane season runs June to November.

Getting around
The Strand and Seawall Boulevard are walkable in their own blocks, but the island is 30 miles long, so a car or rideshare covers the rest. Island Transit runs limited bus routes and replica trolleys link downtown and parts of the seawall. Street parking is metered in busy areas with mobile payment. Bikes and pedal cars rent along the Strand and Seawall.
