Bolivar Peninsula
Go for 2 nights with a car and a beach-house rental; treat it as a Galveston-area stop, not a day trip from Houston.
Bolivar Peninsula is a 28-mile sand strip between Galveston Bay and the Gulf, east of Galveston. It holds three small towns — Port Bolivar, Crystal Beach and High Island — and about 2,800 residents. There is no sightseeing circuit here: you come for driving on the beach, surf fishing, spring birding and a rented beach house. A car is close to essential; without one you are stuck near the ferry landing.

Getting around
You need your own car. TX-87 runs the length of the peninsula, and you may drive onto the beach after buying a beach permit at a local convenience store or bait shop. Bikes work for the short stretch around the Port Bolivar ferry landing and Fort Travis. There is no useful public transport along the peninsula.

- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; the peninsula flooded badly in 2008 and evacuation orders are serious.
- Buy a beach permit before driving onto the sand; check current rules and where to buy.
- Cell coverage is good on TX-87 but can drop to 4G or lower away from Port Bolivar.
- Restaurants are scarce at both ends; eat around Crystal Beach or bring food.
- Summer heat and strong Gulf currents: swim near other people, not alone.
