- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Pensacola Beach is an unincorporated community on Santa Rosa Island, a narrow barrier island in West Florida, separate from mainland Pensacola and administered by Escambia County. The Gulf side has white sand and moderate surf; the Sound side is calm and shallow. Two or three nights covers the beaches, Fort Pickens and the boardwalk; a car or bike helps reach the national seashore.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The island is narrow and long: Via de Luna Drive and Fort Pickens Road run its length. Parking is mostly free but the Casino Beach lot fills on busy weekends. A free beach trolley runs in summer; ECAT bus 61 links Pensacola twice a day for a fare. Bikes work well for the flat island, and the trolley has bike racks.

Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Pensacola
goDoor to door: About 30–40 min
Drive over the Pensacola Bay Bridge via Gulf Breeze, about 20–25 min
Mainland museums, dining and the historic district; pair with a shopping stop.

goDoor to door: About 30–45 min
J. Earle Bowden Way east along the island, or US-98 via Gulf Breeze
Another beach town; the scenic island road is slow and rough in places.
Gulf Breeze
goDoor to door: About 15–20 min
Drive south across the bay bridge
Closest mainland base for groceries and golf.
Perdido Key
cautionDoor to door: About 45–60 min
Drive west via Pensacola and FL-292
Better as its own stop than a return day trip.
Milton, Florida
cautionDoor to door: About 45–55 min
Drive north via Pensacola and US-90
Inland river town; only worth it if you have a car and a spare day.

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Casino Beach / boardwalk area
Walk to the main beach, restaurants and shops; busiest and priciest in summer.
Via de Luna Drive
Hotels and condos along the island's main road; some walkable, some need a car.
Fort Pickens Road west end
Quieter, closer to the national seashore; fewer services, plan for driving.
