  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Brazil ↗US, Canadian and Australian citizens need an e-visa (about US$81 — check) applied for online at the official VFS portal before travel; EU and UK citizens do not. Check your passport with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking.
  • Brazil ↗Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for many areas, including the Amazon and Pantanal; check with a travel clinic at least 10 days before travel.
  • Brazil ↗Keep your phone out of sight in the street and on beaches; phone theft is the most common crime against visitors in big cities.

Campo Grande is the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul and the practical gateway to the southern Pantanal and to Bonito, about 300 km away. Most travellers pass through for one or two nights, using it for flights, buses and food rather than sightseeing. It is a cattle-country city of about 875,000 people, known locally as the cidade morena for its dark red soil, and it eats better than its size suggests.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The city runs on buses with free transfers at the terminals; fares are paid with a transit card, so without one ask the driver to drop you at a terminal where you can pay cash. Taxis are metered and short hops in the centre are cheap. For the airport, a taxi is the simple option.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Bonito

Road transfer via the Transpantaneira

Wildlife lodges; dry season Jun–Oct is best for jaguars and birds.

Corumbá

overnight

Door to door: 5–6 h

Bus from the interstate terminal, 5–6 h

Border town on the Paraguay River; a stop on the way to the northern Pantanal.

Dourados

skip

Door to door: 3–4 h

Bus, about 220 km

Regional city with little for a short trip.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro (around Afonso Pena)

Walkable to Mercadão Municipal, restaurants and the bus station; best for one night with bags.

Near Parque das Nações Indígenas

Quieter, greener, close to the museums on Av. Afonso Pena; needs a taxi or bus to the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Central Campo Grande is busy and generally fine by day; use taxis at night, keep to lit streets around the centre, and treat the bus station and airport areas as transit points rather than places to linger.
  • Bus fares are usually card-only on board; carry small change or pay at a terminal.
  • Distances between sights are long and pavements are uneven; use a taxi after dark.
  • Book Pantanal and Bonito transfers before you arrive — seats fill in the dry season.
