PilsenPlzeň

Give Pilsen one full day and one night: brewery tour plus the square, then move on. Two nights only if you add the underground or a West Bohemia base.

Pilsen is the fourth-largest Czech city and the birthplace of pilsner beer, about an hour from Prague by train or bus. The old centre is compact and walkable in half a day; the brewery and the cathedral tower are the two things worth planning around. It also works as a base for West Bohemia spa towns and Cheb.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Czech Republic ↗Czechia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Czech Republic ↗The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion and avoid street exchange booths.
  • Czech Republic ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.

Getting around

Walk the centre — square, cathedral, synagogue and brewery are all within about 20 minutes on foot. For the zoo, Techmania or Bory use PMDP trams, buses and trolley-buses; buy a timed ticket from a machine or by card on board. Riders aged 65 and over travel free.

Watch out

Safety

Pilsen is a low-risk city; the real issues are pickpockets around the square and station, unmarked bar prices, and tram ticket checks. Standard big-city care after dark is enough.
  • Buy and validate a tram ticket before boarding; inspectors fine on the spot.
  • The cathedral tower closes in bad weather and has a steep climb — check the day's opening before you go up.
  • Brewery and underground tours run on fixed times and sell out in summer: book a slot, don't just turn up.
  • Some bars post no prices; ask the total before ordering.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: náměstí Republiky, brewery and underground, synagogue and West Bohemian Museum, station and Bory.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (cathedral tower, brewery tour, underground, zoo) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Festival and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
