Grande Cache
Go only if you hike: 1 night as a stop on the Hinton–Grande Prairie drive, 2–3 nights to walk Willmore Wilderness or the Sulphur Gates trails.
Grande Cache is a small mountain hamlet on Highway 40, between Hinton and Grande Prairie, built for coal and now leaning on outdoor tourism. There is no town sightseeing to speak of: the reason to stop is the trail network and the Sulphur Gates river cliffs, plus the Canadian Death Race each summer. Fuel, food and beds are limited, so plan the stop around what you can book.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
You need a car. There is no local transit and the trailheads and Sulphur Gates are outside town. A community bus runs to Grande Prairie about once a week and to Hinton about once a month; check days and booking locally. Fuel up in Hinton or Grande Prairie: the stretch of Highway 40 north of Hinton has long gaps between services (check).

Full services, more beds and Jasper access; a sensible base if Grande Cache is full.
Grande Prairie

Municipal campground and highway-facing rooms; handy for an early trail start but a drive from food.
Acorn Plaza
Motel and café cluster on the south side of town; quiet, with parking at the door.

Safety
- Highway 40 is a mountain road: snow, ice, wildlife and long no-service gaps. Check Alberta 511 road conditions before you leave.
- Cell coverage drops outside town and on much of Highway 40; download offline maps.
- This is bear country. Carry bear spray where allowed, make noise on trails, and store food in a vehicle or locker, never in a tent.
- Trails and the Sulphur Gates area can close for wildlife, fire or weather: check Alberta Parks and the hamlet before driving out.
- Beds are few and fill on race weekend and long weekends; book ahead or plan to sleep in Hinton.
