Kalady is a small temple village on the Periyar river, 10 km from Cochin International Airport and the birthplace of the philosopher Adi Sankara. The sights sit in one riverside cluster plus a few outlying temples, so it works as a half-day stop between the airport and Kochi, or as a quiet night if you want dawn at the ghats.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk between the Sringeri Mutt, Sri Krishna temple and the Keerthi Sthambam. Private buses run every 10–30 min to the outlying temples and to Angamaly; auto-rickshaws are cheap and everywhere. For Manjapra, Mattoor or Malayattoor, take an auto or a taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Kalady is a quiet temple village and feels safe by day; the real risks are monsoon flooding on the ghats, unlit roads after dark and heat in April–May. Women travelling alone may get stares; cover shoulders and knees at shrines.
  • Temple dress codes: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off outside the shrines; some inner sanctums are for Hindus only — ask before entering.
  • Photography is restricted inside many shrines; look for the signs or ask.
  • The ghats are working bathing steps with slippery stone and a strong current in monsoon — do not swim.
  • Auto-rickshaw drivers at the bus stand may quote a flat tourist rate; agree the fare first or ask for the meter.
