Requena is a wine town of about 21,000 people in the west of Valencia province, an hour by regional train from Valencia and on the high-speed line to Madrid. Its old Muslim quarter, the Barrio de la Villa, still sits inside medieval walls, with a Moorish tower, three old churches, a maze of caves and an 18th-century tunnel under the streets. The town is the centre of the Requena-Utiel wine region, known for reds from the native Bobal grape. Sights are small, cheap and close together; the wineries are outside town and need a car or a taxi.

Getting around

The old centre is small and walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end; expect steep lanes and steps in the Barrio de la Villa. Wineries sit 5–15 km out on the A-3 and need a car, taxi or a booked tour. The regional C3 train from Valencia stops at Requena station, a block from the bus stop; the high-speed Requena-Utiel station is several kilometres outside town and needs a taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Requena is a small, calm town and street crime is rare; the real issues are summer heat, steep uneven lanes in the old town, and driving back from wineries after tastings. Use 112 for anything urgent.
  • Two stations: the C3 regional train stops in town, the high-speed Requena-Utiel station is outside it. Check which one your ticket uses.
  • Sight hours are short and split by the midday break; several small museums open only a few hours a day or by appointment.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and the old town is steep; do the walls and caves in the morning.
  • Wineries need a booking for tours and tastings, and many are closed on Sundays.
