Mandu (Mandav) is a ruined citadel on a Vindhya plateau at 634 m, capital of Malwa sultans between 1401 and 1561 and called Shadiabad, the City of Joy. The monuments run in five clusters across a plateau roughly 10 km long, so you need wheels or a bicycle, not just feet. Most travellers come from Indore as a day trip; sleeping one or two nights in the village is the better call.

Getting around

The groups are too far apart to cover all on foot. Hire a car with driver through your hotel for a full day, or rent a bicycle and give it two days. Local guides wait at the main monuments and run a fixed circuit. Autos and shared jeeps cover short hops in the village.

Watch out

Safety

Mandu is a small, low-crime village and the ruins are safe by day. The real risks are heat, slippery monsoon paths, unlit plateau edges after dark and cash-only hotels: carry rupees and finish sightseeing before sunset.
  • Ruins are unlit and unfenced: no night walking on the plateau edge.
  • Monsoon makes the plateau green but paths slippery and leeches possible.
  • Few ATMs and card machines in Mandu: carry cash from Indore or Dhar.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the plateau.
  • Guides at the gate are not licensed by a single body: agree the route and price first.
