Fergus is a small stone-built town on the Grand River, about 25 km north of Guelph, with roughly 23,200 residents. Almost everyone comes for what surrounds it: the Elora Gorge, Belwood Lake and the village of Elora 5 km west. Stay one night, or use it as a quiet, cheaper base instead of Guelph or Elora.

Getting around

The centre is a walkable grid; the river and St Andrew St cover most of it in 20–30 minutes. Everything else — Elora, the gorge, Belwood Lake, the museum — needs a car or taxi. Bicycle rental is available in town (about $50/day, $30/half-day).

Safety

Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are rural roads at night, deer and winter ice, and river or gorge edges after rain. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight.
  • No train station and no local transit: without a car you are limited to the town core.
  • Gorge trails and riverbanks are slippery after rain and closed at times in winter: check conditions before you go.
  • Taxis are few and must be booked; the Guelph run was quoted at $45–55 (≈ US$35–40).
