Bellinzona is the capital of Ticino and the gate to the Gotthard and San Bernardino routes, with three medieval castles and a walled old town packed into a small centre. Most travellers see it as a half-day rail stop between Zurich and Lugano; one night is enough if you want the castles without rushing, and the lakes at Lugano and Locarno are about 25–35 min away by train.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to Castelgrande about 10 min, Castelgrande to Montebello about 10 min uphill, Montebello to Sasso Corbaro about 20 min more. City and postal buses run from Piazzale Stazione (bus 4 toward Artore for Sasso Corbaro; bus 191 toward Claro for the Santa Maria monastery). Trains and PostBus cover the valleys.

Safety

Bellinzona is a calm, low-crime small city; the real risks are steep castle paths in the heat, fast river water and pickpockets only around the station at train times.
  • Castle opening hours shorten outside Jul–Aug; the Nov–Mar museum window at Castelgrande is roughly 10:00–16:00 — check before you climb.
  • Sasso Corbaro is 462 m up the hill: the walk is steep, take the bus if it is hot.
  • The Ticino river and the Moesa confluence have strong currents and cold water; swim only where locals do.
  • Sunday: many shops in the old town close; restaurants still open.
