Mount Isa is a working mining city of about 22,000 people in north-west Queensland, roughly 900 km west of Townsville and 1,900 km from Brisbane. The draw is industrial and geological rather than scenic: an underground mine tour, the Riversleigh fossil collection, a hilltop lookout over the smelter stacks, and a rodeo that briefly triples the population. It works as a one- or two-night stop on an outback drive or as a fly-in break, not as a destination you build a fortnight around.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable, but the airport, lookout and some motels are a drive away. Car hire is available in the centre and at the airport; taxis cover short trips. If you are driving the Barkly Highway, fuel and supplies are straightforward in town and thin beyond it.

Watch out

Safety

A small, ordinary outback city; the real risks are heat, long empty drives and flooded roads in summer, not crime. Lock the car and keep water with you.
  • Summer heat is the main hazard: plan indoor or underground activities for the middle of the day and carry water.
  • Wet season can close roads west and north of town. Never drive across a flooded causeway, even without barricades.
  • Long distances between towns: the next fuel east is Cloncurry, about 120 km away.
  • Book mine tours and rodeo-week beds ahead; the town fills for the rodeo.
