Mount Isa

Mount Isa is a working mining city of about 22,000 people in north-west Queensland, roughly 900 km west of Townsville and 1,900 km from Brisbane. The draw is industrial and geological rather than scenic: an underground mine tour, the Riversleigh fossil collection, a hilltop lookout over the smelter stacks, and a rodeo that briefly triples the population. It works as a one- or two-night stop on an outback drive or as a fly-in break, not as a destination you build a fortnight around.

Get around
The centre is small and walkable, but the airport, lookout and some motels are a drive away. Car hire is available in the centre and at the airport; taxis cover short trips. If you are driving the Barkly Highway, fuel and supplies are straightforward in town and thin beyond it.

Language
English everywhere, with a fast, informal Australian style: shortened words (arvo, servo, brekkie), 'mate' for anyone and irony as default. Place names across the country come from Aboriginal languages, and signs increasingly use dual names.
