Walewale

Skip unless you are driving the Bolgatanga–Tamale road and need a lunch or fuel stop: the mosque is worth 20 minutes, but there is no reason to stay overnight.

Walewale is a market town at the junction of the Bolgatanga–Tamale highway and the road to Nalerigu. Its main draw is a 1961 mosque with a Moorish tower, built on the site of an older mud-and-stick mosque. The central market is lively on market days, but the town has no major sight that justifies a detour. Most travellers pass through in under an hour.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
  • Ghana ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Ghana Immigration Service or a Ghanaian mission before booking; many nationalities need a visa in advance.
  • Ghana ↗Check the yellow-fever vaccination certificate rules for Ghana before you fly; carry the certificate with your passport if you have one.

Watch out

Safety

Walewale is generally safe, but petty theft can occur at the market. Keep valuables out of sight and avoid walking alone after dark on unlit streets. The main road is well travelled.
  • The mosque is a place of worship: dress modestly and ask permission before entering or photographing.
  • Market day (check local schedule) brings crowds and traffic on the main road.
  • Guest houses may have erratic water and power; bring a torch and cash.
  • Last tro-tros to Bolgatanga or Tamale leave by late afternoon.
