Fitchburg
Give Fitchburg one day, not a base: the art museum and Coggshall Park in an afternoon, then sleep in Leominster or push on to Boston.
Fitchburg is a former mill city of about 40,000 in North County, Massachusetts, on the MBTA Fitchburg line and MA 2. Its one outsized draw is the Fitchburg Art Museum, which is bigger and better than a city this size suggests. Everything else — a Victorian park, a downtown common, a water park — fits a half-day. Lodging is thin, so most travellers sleep in neighbouring Leominster or treat Fitchburg as a rail stop between Boston and the Wachusett hills.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
Downtown sights are walkable, but Fitchburg grew up before the car and the streets are narrow and irregular — a grid map will not help. For Coggshall Park, Great Wolf Lodge or Leominster you need a car or a rideshare; local bus service exists but is limited. The MBTA Fitchburg line runs to Boston, with infrequent weekend trains.

Downtown / Upper Common
Walk to the art museum, the Boulder Cafe and the rail station; very few beds, so book early or look at Leominster.

Family water-park hotel; you pay for the park, not the city.
Leominster (next town east)
The practical base: chain hotels and the Whitney Field Mall, 10–15 min by car from downtown Fitchburg.

Watch out
Safety
- Weekend MBTA trains are infrequent — check the timetable before you plan a day around the rail.
- Winter ice and unploughed side streets make downtown walking slippery from December to March.
- Lodging inside the city is scarce; book Leominster or further out rather than arriving without a bed.
- Downtown is quiet after dark; use normal city caution and stay on lit streets.
