LeominsterLeominster, Massachusetts
Give Leominster one night as a North County base, or half a day for the Johnny Appleseed birthplace and Sholan Farms; skip it if Boston or Worcester is your only stop.
Leominster is a former factory town of about 41,000 people on Route 2, roughly an hour west of Boston and 25–30 minutes north of Worcester. It is the birthplace of Johnny Appleseed, keeps a walkable downtown of 19th-century mill and civic buildings, and works best as a cheap bed and a half-day stop while you drive the North County. There is no rail station in town: the MBTA Fitchburg line ends one town north.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the default: parking downtown and on the retail strips is free or cheap, and Route 2, Route 12 and I-190 do the heavy lifting. Downtown sights are walkable from each other in 5–15 minutes, but the city covers a large area and Sholan Farms and Doyle Community Park are 10–15 min drives out. There is no train station in Leominster; the nearest MBTA Fitchburg line stop is in Fitchburg, one town north. Local bus service is limited — check the current MART routes before relying on it.

Safety
- No rail station in town: do not plan a car-free arrival from Boston.
- Route 2 and I-190 ice over in winter; snow tires or all-wheel drive help Dec–Mar.
- Suburban roads have long unlit stretches — carry a light if walking after dark.
- Many downtown shops and the historical society keep short, volunteer-run hours: check before you go.
