Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Viterbo was the papal seat from 1257 to 1281 and still keeps a walled medieval centre that takes about half a day on foot. It sits 1.5–2 hours from Rome by regional train, which makes it a long day trip or a quiet one-night stop between Rome and Orvieto. The draw is the Palazzo dei Papi, the lanes of the San Pellegrino district and the free Bulicame thermal springs outside the walls.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The walled centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Local buses (Francigena) cover the stations, Bagnaia and the springs; buy tickets at tobacconists and validate them on board. A car helps for the springs, Ferento and day trips, but park outside the walls.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Villa Lante, Bagnaia

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Local bus from the centre toward Bagnaia, about 10 min, then a short walk

Mannerist garden with water chains; closed Mondays and limited winter hours, check before going.

Civita di Bagnoregio

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car or bus toward Bagnoregio, then the pedestrian bridge

The bridge is the only way in and carries a small entry fee; go early.

Bomarzo

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car or bus toward Bomarzo, then a local taxi

The Sacro Bosco monster park needs a timed ticket in high season.

Tarquinia

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Car via the SS1 or train with a change

Etruscan tombs and museum; easier as a stop on the Rome line than a return trip.

Orvietoovernight

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train with a change at Orte

Better as the next stop on the Rome–Florence line than a day return.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro storico (San Pellegrino and Piazza del Gesù)

Inside the walls, walking distance to everything; guesthouses and small hotels, some stairs and no car access.

Porta Romana and Porta Fiorentina

Around the two stations; practical for one night with bags and for early trains.

Bagnaia

Suburb 4 km northeast, next to Villa Lante; only worth it if the garden is your main reason.

Watch out

Safety

Viterbo is a calm, low-crime town; the real risks are the unsupervised thermal springs, traffic on the roads out to them, and summer heat in the walled centre.
  • Driving into the walled centre is one-way, narrow and restricted; park outside and walk in.
  • The free thermal springs are open-air and unsupervised: no lifeguard, slippery rocks, and water up to about 55°C.
  • Many churches and the Palazzo dei Papi keep limited hours and close at midday; check before you walk out.
  • Summer afternoons in the centre are hot and much of the old town shuts for lunch.

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Viterbo. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for FCO and CIA: last regional trains from Rome field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Piazza del Gesù and San Pellegrino, the cathedral and Palazzo dei Papi, Porta Romana, Bagnaia.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Palazzo dei Papi, Rocca Albornoz museum, Villa Lante) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Thermal-spring fixture with access, parking and safety notes so the free-soak option can go green.
