Viterbo
Give Viterbo one full day and one night from Rome: the papal palace, the medieval lanes and a free thermal soak. Two nights only if you add Villa Lante.
Viterbo was the papal seat from 1257 to 1281 and still keeps a walled medieval centre that takes about half a day on foot. It sits 1.5–2 hours from Rome by regional train, which makes it a long day trip or a quiet one-night stop between Rome and Orvieto. The draw is the Palazzo dei Papi, the lanes of the San Pellegrino district and the free Bulicame thermal springs outside the walls.

Get around
The walled centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Local buses (Francigena) cover the stations, Bagnaia and the springs; buy tickets at tobacconists and validate them on board. A car helps for the springs, Ferento and day trips, but park outside the walls.
