  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
  • Sierra Leone ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Sierra Leone government sources before booking.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Freetown's traffic is slow, its roads are crowded and its airport is across an estuary, so the trips that go wrong are the ones that move at the wrong hour: a late arrival with no crossing booked, a cross-town drive at rush hour, or a rainy-season afternoon. Four small walking areas cover the centre, the harbour front, Lumley Beach and the east end, and every leg between them is a car ride with a known driver.

Fits

  • Travellers with a local driver or host
  • History and culture visitors
  • Beach evenings on the coast

Does not fit

  • Solo night walkers
  • Travellers without cash
  • Wheelchair users and strollers

Don't confuse
Lungi International Airport is on the north bank of the Sierra Leone River estuary, not in Freetown; the crossing or road drive is part of the trip.

  • Government Wharf and the harbour front: Logistics cluster: the harbour front and ferry landing; go with a driver, not on foot, and only for a boat or a specific errand.
  • Aberdeen and Lumley Beach: Evening cluster: the beach road with hotels, restaurants and the sand; the easiest area for a first night and a sunset.
  • East end: Fourah Bay: Half-morning cluster: the old college buildings and the east-end streets; go with a guide or driver who knows the area.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • History and colonial-era sites
  • Beach evenings
  • Hills and sea views

You will hate

  • Traffic and slow roads
  • Heavy rain
  • Needing lots of cash

Arrive & move

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside an area; a driver from your hotel between areas.
Passes
No pass. Agree the fare before the ride; fares rise in rain and traffic.
Last trains
No rail; shared taxis and hotel cars run, but avoid moving after dark.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Plan every crossing and every cross-town ride in daylight; do not walk between areas, and go back to your hotel before dark.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding service; keep the big bag at the hotel.
Dead zone
Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a shower room, and confirm the crossing time before you leave.

Survive

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Keep valuables out of sight and do not walk at night.
  • Water taxis: use reputable operators with life jackets and do not cross in bad weather.
  • Emergency numbers may not connect: save your hotel's and driver's numbers and your insurer's line (field-verify local numbers).
  • Heat: shade and water from 11:00 to 15:00.

Red lines

  • Do not photograph the military, police, government buildings or the airport.
  • Ask before photographing people.
  • Use your right hand to give and receive.

Practical

  • Toilets: hotels and larger restaurants; carry tissues.
  • Tap water is not for drinking; bottled or filtered only.
