Freetown

Freetown is a daylight city: see the museum and cathedral in the morning, take the beach in the afternoon, and be at your hotel before dark; book the airport crossing before you fly.

Freetown's traffic is slow, its roads are crowded and its airport is across an estuary, so the trips that go wrong are the ones that move at the wrong hour: a late arrival with no crossing booked, a cross-town drive at rush hour, or a rainy-season afternoon. Four small walking areas cover the centre, the harbour front, Lumley Beach and the east end, and every leg between them is a car ride with a known driver.

Lungi International Airport (FNA)
FNA to your bed: pre-book the airport pickup and the crossing to Freetown before you fly — the estuary is the risk, not the distance, and the crossing may not run after dark.

Seafood grill on Lumley Beach
A beachside grill for fish and lobster: go before dark, ask for the price before you order, and pay in cash or check that cards work.
Rice-and-stew canteens
Simple canteens near the centre with rice, cassava leaf and grilled fish at lunch; go before 14:00 with small notes, and expect them to close by mid-afternoon.

Aberdeen and Lumley
First night: choose a beach-road hotel with a 24h desk, a generator and a car that can meet you — the coast is where most visitors sleep.
Central Freetown
The night before an early crossing or a museum morning: a hotel near the centre with a staffed desk and a car you can call, not a guesthouse with a locked gate.

Language

English is official, but Krio, an English-based creole born among Freetown's freed settlers, is what everyone speaks. It is easy to pick up by ear. Mende dominates the south and east, Temne the north.

  • Krio: 'Tenki' (thank you), 'Aw di bodi?' (how are you?), 'Na aw mos?' (how much?).
  • 'Opoto' means white foreigner.

  • Greeting: Greet warmly and ask 'Aw di bodi?'; avoid: Skipping greetings
  • Hands: Right hand for everything; avoid: Left-hand money
  • Elders: Greet first; use 'Pa' and 'Ma'; avoid: First names
  • Dress: Modest clothes in town and mosques; avoid: Beachwear away from the beach
  • Photos: Ask first; avoid: Police, soldiers, society rituals

Red lines

  • Do not photograph the military, police, government buildings or the airport.
  • Ask before photographing people.
  • Use your right hand to give and receive.

  • Airport 'helpers': Use your booked water-taxi operator's staff only.
  • Diamond and gold deals: Illegal without licences and usually fake.
  • Fake e-visa sites: Use evisa.sl only.
  • Overpriced boat hire: Book through lodges; agree the price first.
  • Charity and school 'donations': Give through registered NGOs.
