The honest verdict

Freetown's traffic is slow, its roads are crowded and its airport is across an estuary, so the trips that go wrong are the ones that move at the wrong hour: a late arrival with no crossing booked, a cross-town drive at rush hour, or a rainy-season afternoon. Four small walking areas cover the centre, the harbour front, Lumley Beach and the east end, and every leg between them is a car ride with a known driver.
