Elazığ sits at 1,067 m in the mountains of Eastern Anatolia, ringed by reservoir lakes and split between the modern valley town and the old hilltop of Harput, 7 km away. The railway and the D300 pass through, so most travellers use it as a break between Malatya and Van. Harput, Lake Hazar and the food are the reasons to stop; the city itself is a working Anatolian town with few set-piece sights.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. Frequent dolmuşes run between the centre and Harput; taxis are cheap for the 7 km climb. For Lake Hazar, Sivrice, Keban and the winery you need a car or a dolmuş from the otogar, and the drives are 30–60 min each way.

Watch out

Safety

Elazığ is a conservative eastern city and generally calm for visitors; the real risks are winter roads, deep water at Lake Hazar and unlit streets around Harput after dark. Standard precautions apply, and check current travel advice for the wider region before you go.
  • Harput is 7 km uphill from the centre: agree the taxi fare or take a dolmuş, and keep the return leg in mind after dark.
  • Lake Hazar beaches are rocky and the water is deep (max 213 m): swim with care and no lifeguards assumed.
  • Winter closes high roads and can delay flights and the train; check before a January or February transfer.
  • Carry lira in small notes: smaller eateries and dolmuşes may not take cards.
  • The Fırat Ekspresi to Adana has been suspended: check current status before planning around it.
