One night for Harput and the lake, two if you want Hazar and the winery: Elazığ is a stopover on the Van road, not a destination week.
Elazığ sits at 1,067 m in the mountains of Eastern Anatolia, ringed by reservoir lakes and split between the modern valley town and the old hilltop of Harput, 7 km away. The railway and the D300 pass through, so most travellers use it as a break between Malatya and Van. Harput, Lake Hazar and the food are the reasons to stop; the city itself is a working Anatolian town with few set-piece sights.
