Halifax is a former wool town in the South Pennines, 40 minutes by train from Leeds and about an hour from Manchester. The Piece Hall, a 1779 cloth-trading yard turned shops and bars, is the reason most people come; Shibden Hall and the Anne Lister story are the second. It works as a day trip from Leeds or Manchester, or as one night if you want the moors and a slower evening.

The centre is walkable: Piece Hall, the Minster, the Borough Market and the station sit within about 15 minutes of each other. Buses from Halifax bus station reach Shibden Hall, Bankfield Museum and the surrounding towns; West Yorkshire Metro publishes the timetables and day tickets. Trains on the Caldervale line link Leeds, Bradford, Manchester and Huddersfield.

Watch out

Safety

Halifax is a normal, safe West Yorkshire town; the real risks are the weather, uneven pavements and a late-night walk back from the bars. Keep to lit streets after closing time and use a licensed taxi.
  • Hills and cobbles: the town centre slopes, so wear shoes you can walk in.
  • Weather changes fast on the moors; carry a waterproof even on a bright morning.
  • Some pubs and bars stop serving earlier on Sundays and Mondays; check before you plan a late night.
  • Square Chapel arts centre closed in 2025 and its future is uncertain in 2026: check before travelling for a show.
