Halifax
Give Halifax one full day and one night: Piece Hall, the Minster and Shibden Hall fit a day; two nights only if you add a moor walk or Eureka! with kids.
Halifax is a former wool town in the South Pennines, 40 minutes by train from Leeds and about an hour from Manchester. The Piece Hall, a 1779 cloth-trading yard turned shops and bars, is the reason most people come; Shibden Hall and the Anne Lister story are the second. It works as a day trip from Leeds or Manchester, or as one night if you want the moors and a slower evening.
